ATI Driver problems

I installed the latest ATI ver. 7.10 drivers before I installed the Painkiller Overdose demo.

When I tried running the demo, all I got was a black screen.
I also had the same problem with videos after installing ATI 7.10, but I was able to fix that by decreasing the video acceleration, but the video's still had some problems.

The only way I was able to get the PKO demo to run was by uninstalling the ATI 7.10 drivers, rebooting, installing the ATI 7.08 drivers, and rebooting twice, then the demo worked, and my videos were perfect again.

I had a similar problem with ATI 7.09 and the Quake Wars demo, after going back to the ATI 7.08 drivers it worked fine.

So for now I will stay with the ATI 7.08 drivers until a new version is released with no bugs.

You can download earlier versions of the ATI drivers at this site:

RE: ATI Driver problems

SRY, no clue on Overdose and more - on ATI tech.
I have played PK all my "pkish" life on NVIDIA cards.

I suggest you ask varus or kalme at darkscorner:

RE: ATI Driver problems

BTW, I have a Sapphire Radeon x1650 pro 512mb

Ever since I went back to the ATI 7.08 driver, I haven't had any problems.

The ATI 7.08 driver file is 35mb, but the 7.09 and 7.10 drivers are both about 44mb, so there were some major changes, maybe that's causing the problems.

The only differences I noticed in the change logs, is that versions 7.09 and 7.10 have some extra support for vista 64bit.

Version 7.11 should be out soon, i'll try it and post the results here.

RE: ATI Driver problems

I suppose then that for WINXP the last real driver working on major games will remain 7.08, because as you said, if from 7.09 they added tweaks to Vista, i bet this will continue FW and crashes will remain.

RE: ATI Driver problems

I use XP pro SP2, I haven't tried vista yet.

Each PC is different, the ATI 7.10 driver didn't work on my PC but it may work on your cousins PC, he should try ver 7.10 to see if it works.

He can test the 7.10 driver by installing the PKO demo and/or watching online videos from youtube.

If the game or video's are black/blank then you can try lowering the video acceleration, if that doesn't work then install ver. 7.08.

I wonder if will be getting here any future error reports on PK being not compatible on Vista, and more to that - driver problems, i am not a technician, and i am alone here. :-)

RE: ATI Driver problems

I installed the new ATI 7.11 driver and the bugs from versions 7.09 & 7.10 seem to have been fixed.
I tried a few games and videos and everything seems to work ok. 8)

I only install the video driver, I do a "custom" install and uncheck the useless extra stuff like EarthSim, Steam, Games, & Catalyst.

So if anyone is having video problems, try the new ATI 7.11 driver.
