This Guide is dedicated to the further understanding of Painkillers movement. Many have critisized it as too simple and made for newbies. Under what seems to be a very simple movement system, there lies alot of understanding and complexity. Through this Guide I hope to show people how to better their movement and to show people Painkillers movement isn't a simple "hold forward and jump". As I have time to write up on this and add techniques this Guide will update and will be an announcement of it's update on the forum(Announcement Section). If you believe you know a movement technique not on this list please feel free to add it to the movement tips section here. You'll get credit for your participation and further help the community.
How does it work?
Seize Air Control
You can also control where you go in the air by moving your mouse left or right. The amount of control in the air you get is pretty insane and only grows bigger as you accelerate yourself. You can also apply this to all other directions too including forward+right or forward+left.
180 Degree Turn
A pretty neat thing you can do is do a total 180 and keep going about the same speed(depending how fast you were going and how good you are at 180 degree turns). This is a very indepth thing so read VERY WELL..... Just swing your mouse really hard. Yup, pretty simple. You can practice this in DM_Sacred in the teleport+shotgun+bronze armor room where the 2 25 lifes are. You basicly do 180 degree turns trying not to hit the walls. Do know this isn't the jump that will let you look behind you while going your original direction, this flat out changes your direction. Read on further for that.
90 Degree Jumps
Here's a first glimpse of the unique movement to Painkiller alot of rambling old geezers(or at least sounds like them) seem to overlook completely. You can practice this on either PCF map or any large spacious room. You basicly start off by jumping forward and then as you land you hit strafe left or right(depending where you want to go) and hit jump again. This does a complete 90 degree turn. Think dodge jumping but by far faster. You can continue to do this by then repeating the proccess to do a box shape with your movement pattern. This leads to further more complex movements explained later.
Circle Strafing
Circle Strafing is the action by which you can jump around your opponent while aiming at him. In this you use the last 2 movement properties shown. Remember you can use air control with any movement key and you will retain control+speed as long as you don't try a direct 180. What you do is you go upto a player using the normal forward jumping and then do a 90 degree jump. Now hold down whichever strafe key you used and turn your mouse the opposite direction(so if I hit strafe right for the 90 degree jump, I move my mouse left as I continue to jump). Continue to keep holding the current strafe key and jump while moving your mouse left accordingly and you will be jumping around a focused center.
90 Degree Jump Turn
Now this will be a bit wierd and hard to master in the sense of when/where to use it. The basic sense to this jump is to use air control and 45/90 degree jump- all at once. It isn't hard to do at all, but again hard to master in the sense of where/when because just doing it all the time will just slow you down. What you do is you go into a normal 45 degree turn and then once the jump is made you left go immediately of the forward button and move your mouse the same direction as the strafe key(i.e if you hit right strafe, move your mouse right). This will do a sorta semi U-turn jump. This is usefull in DM_Sacred at a certain spot. If you go to the MegaHealth room and go up the stairs and go to the room with the teleport, shotgun, bronzearmor and do this, you will hurrel at the teleport while being able to aim at the door next to the shotgun or the hallway.
180 Degree View Change
Having trouble moving your original direction and looking behind you for badies? Yeah Painkiller's movement doesn't allow for the simple just look behind and hit back keys. If you try this you just stop and lose all mommentum. But there is a way, actually 2. The first way I don't like so much cause though it's pretty simple I can't seem to do it right all the time. It's not cause it isn't truely easier, it's just I'm wierd like that. What you basicly do is you let go of forward but keep jumping, look behind you and once you got the view you want hit the direction of movement key you want. Though it's easier then the next one, do know it's one immediate downside, the jump you made without pressing any direction key means you lose a bit of speed, not much but top that that without gaining and it might. The good side though is you're not bound to where you want to go outside an opposing direction. The way I first found and like to use more is also simple but tedious. You basicly do 2 90 degree jump turns untill you look behind you or whichever direction you wish.
Experimentation
Now you understand how to use air control, acceleration, the 90 degree turn and able to add it to a circle strafe. The last thing to learn is the most time consuming- being able to use all these movements for real dodging. This is one of those things I can't just write up a guide on how to but something that you must develope just like any other movement basis for any game. The only hint I can give think outside the box and watch how other people use their techniques. Just know this simple note, you can move 90 degrees directly in any direction you're moving or turn upto I guess 220 degrees(I don't see any reason for past 180 degrees, just to let you know you can) and can combine turning and directly jumping in a 45 or 90 degree angle.
